FAQ

What does Chat Catcher do?

Chat Catcher scans services like Twitter and FriendFeed for references to your blog posts. When someone links to your blog, their post will be published to your blog's comments.

Which Blogging Platforms are supported?

Chat Catcher will work with any modern platform that supports trackbacks.  You can also use the RSS option if you do not have trackbacks enabled.  The Chat Catcher script is located on the same server as your blog.  In theory, your blog should not reject trackbacks from the same server, but you may need to monitor your blog's spam filter.

Will Chat Catcher work on a 'hosted' blog?

If you cannot FTP a script to your blog, you may use the 'Scriptless' option.  A pingback will be posted to your blog instead of a trackback.

How does Chat Catcher get its data?

Twitter post history is provided by Search.Twitter.com.

FriendFeed data is pulled from the FriendFeed API.

identi.ca data is pulled from identi.ca search.

How do you handle tiny urls?

Tiny urls from any url shortening service are expanded to each original address.  Url shortening services include (but are not limited to)  bit.ly, budURL, eweri, hex.io, idek.net, is.gd, lin.cr, POPrl, snipurl, tinyurl, tr.im, twurl, urlBorg, and  zi.ma.

What if I don’t see any comments?

Chat Catcher will attempt to autodiscover trackback links in your blog.  Each blog should be setup properly for autodiscovery.  You can test your script using the script tester.

Will Chat Catcher generate spam?

You may receive unwanted comments to your blog.  You can moderate them just as you do any other comment.  If a particular user is causing problems, you can enter the username of that user in the Chat Catcher script and that person's  comments will be ignored.
